November 2008 -AUTUMN SPIRIT STEPS
The sunsets the past couple of nights
have been absolutely beautiful. Last night, as was driving in the
country, the sun was still high enough on the horizon that it lit up
the tree tops on a distant hill. The color of the leaves glowing in
the setting sun was spectacular. The shades of red, orange, yellow,
and green appeared to be glowing beacons of color lighting up the eastern
sky. I pulled off the road and sat in quiet awe at the sight. As
I sat in silence soaking up the splendor of the moment, a doe and two
fawns strolled out of the woods, stopped for a few seconds to check
me out, and then began eating in the tall green grass. It was one
of those breath-taking moments that happen every now and again. As
the sun sank lower in the west, the light moved rapidly up the hill
and finally off the hill completely but behind me a whole new display
of grandeur was taking place. The western sky was ablaze with streaks
of red and pink, blue and white as the sun disappeared beneath the
horizon. Ten minutes later the show was all over and I started the
car and headed for home.
With the sights of that sunset etched
in my brain, I watched the evening news. The market was down even
more; there was talk of worldwide economic collapse, more foreclosures,
more people losing their jobs, more struggling.
This morning I was out early. As I
walked, the sun appeared on the eastern horizon, a giant orange ball
lighting up the sky as if attempting to rival its setting the past
couple of evenings. The air was crisp and with a nip about it and
the dry leaves crunched with each step I took. All in all it was as
refreshing as it was beautiful.
As I finished my breakfast back home
I listened to the news; another day of chaos on Wall Street, more losses,
more heartache.
We are about to elect a new president.
Do we expect he will save us from this mess? Will he provide the splendor
of a sunset? Will he provide the refreshment of a new day? When will
we learn? When will we get it? Jesus told us that we need to put
our trust in something which moths could not destroy, or Wall Street
could lose, or the wind could blow off the trees.
Lord, this disorder awaits your order
--- and so do we.
PEACE,
Pastor Bob
